Our Plan

The Healthy Places, Healthy People initiative focuses on the promotion of active living and healthy eating. Specific strategies in these key issue areas include:

  • Increasing accessibility, availability, affordability and identification of healthy foods and beverages in communities, schools, and workplaces
  • Increasing opportunities for physical activity in communities, schools and workplaces
  • Increasing policies and practices to support breastfeeding in healthcare settings and workplaces

In implementing these strategies, special attention is directed to achieving health equity, eliminating health disparities, and improving the health of all populations for measurable outcomes in Austin/Travis County. The ultimate goals are to:

  • Reduce the rate of obesity through nutrition and physical activity interventions by 5 percent
  • Reduce death and disability due to heart disease and stroke by 5 percent
