Hello Austin!
Welcome to Healthy Places, Healthy People! We’re glad you stopped by. Please browse through the tabs at the top of the page (Our Vision, Our People, etc.) to get a thorough understanding of who we are and what we’re all about.
Almost a year ago, the Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services Department started a process of talking to residents, City leaders, and other stakeholders in the school, healthcare, government, and nonprofit arenas about the challenges our community faces in eating healthy and being physically active. We learned alot of new information that contributed to a community discussion, which ultimately led to the nine strategic recommendations we are moving forward with as a springboard for action. We’re pleased that we were immediately able to fund two projects with AISD that allow and encourage schoolchildren to be healthy every day! The first, featured here, is a project that renovated an old school cafeteria serving line to put the focus on fruits, vegetables, and unsweetened milk.
With continued funding, we plan to initiate and implement more projects in Austin and Travis County that improve our nutrition and physical activity environments, policies, and systems, using the nine recommendations as our guideline. However, we can’t do it alone! Our primary objective is for Austin/Travis County leaders, businesses, schools, nonprofit organizations, and health organizations to adopt any or all of the nine recommendations into their own mission, work plan, and budget. Our impact will be great when we work together on common goals.
This site isn’t just about us!
